October 2017 Meeting Info!
Monday- 6PM- October 9 , 2017 Enchanted Woodturners Meeting
We will meet at Santa Fe High School Woodworking Shop, look at the high school’s location on Google Maps to see it better.
Subject: Thin Long Stem Goblets
Presenter: Alan Becker
Alan’s presentation will be a live turning demonstration on how to turn a thin long stem goblet. There actually may be two live turning demonstrations on how to turn a thin long stem goblet, if the stem breaks in the first demonstration. Even if the stem breaks in any of the demonstrations, Alan will also be telling us how to turn a thin long stem goblet without breaking the stem.
We all know Alan, but do you know that Alan graduated with honors from Annapolis (together with a nice Cowboy quarterback) and then spent 28 distinguished years in the Navy. But by the end of 28 years in the Navy he was not having much fun, so he decided to work for himself, as an engineer specializing in the design and construction of diving equipment. Alan retired in 2009 and moved to Santa Fe in 2010.
Alan has always had a keen interest in woodworking and has been actively consumed by woodturning for many years before he moved to Santa Fe. He believes there is a unique excitement about working with wood, the magnificent coloring, sensual texture and wonderful shapes that each piece possesses. Each piece is different and unique and the challenge is to uncover this beauty with careful study and tender attention. Alan’s goal is to create curves and shapes which are pleasing to touch as well as pleasant to see.
We will all have a wonderful time, so come and see if Alan only has to give us one demonstration. Don’t be late; and come early to visit with friends.
“Show & Tell” please bring at least one “good” piece to brag about, and one “mistake/bad” piece to explain or ask what went wrong.
